Marika Spijkers

Hi, my name is Marika Spijkers. I was born on november 2 1970 in Den Bosch, The Netherlands.

My biggest passion is sculpting fantasydolls. Some inspiration sources for me were the drawings of Brian Froud, the fantasy puppets from Dutch themepark The Efteling and the work of Dutch dollmaker Ria Odijk back in the early 90s. I also like to read fantasy en SF novels for inspiration.

At the age of 19 I started sculpting for the first time, with the help of instruction books of Ria Odijk. I started off with air drying clay, the next clay I tried was polymer clay, this was perfect for me. Over the years I tried different brands, for a long time I worked with Puppenfimo, but these days I use Prosculpt or Sculpey Livingdoll. Sometimes I switch to air drying clay, it depends on the project.

I really enjoy sculpting fantasydolls like fairies, trolls and other creatures, but I also had a lot of fun sculpting portrait dolls, character dolls and little animals. The fantasy creatures are still my favorite because you can really use your imagination, there are no limits.

Over the years I went to creative fairs with my work, gave sculpting demonstrations in hobby stores, did some expositions. My work was published in Dutch, American and Italian magazines. In 1994 I began giving sculpting classes. I did this for about 7 years. I don’t give classes anymore but I did expand my website with online lessons for the beginning dollmaker. Because of the lessons and showing work in progress pictures and sharing tips, I received many kind and enthusiastic responses from all over the world. It is always so rewarding to share your passion with other people.
